Preparing For Your HGV Theory Test

When you’re preparing to upgrade your standard driving license to an HGV one, you will need to take a theory test. Just like your original test, this test is split into 2 parts, multiple choice and hazard perception, but these are aimed at the HGV industry. Understand the Process

The best way to combat nerves is to make sure you know what you’re walking in to. That means familiarising yourself with the process. We have a few pointers to help you out:

• The test is split into 2 sections – multiple choice and hazard perception
• There are 100 questions in the multiple choice section
• You need a minimum score of 67 to pass the multiple choice
• The hazard perception section is made up of 19 videos, with 20 potential hazards in them
• There are also 100 multiple choice questions in hazard perception, and you need 67 to pass this section too
• You can split the sections up onto different days if you want, but most people take them in one go

Take A Practice Test

There is nothing truer than the phrase ‘practice makes perfect’, especially when it comes to tests. As early as primary school, students are encouraged to take practice tests to make sure they are prepared for the real thing. And that’s exactly what you should do too. There are plenty of practice tests available online, but we recommend this one, which will take you through a simulation of your real theory test from beginning to end. This might not give you the same questions as you will face on your actual test, but it should give you a good feel for it and get you in the right space to answer questions. It’s also a good way to find out if you have any gaps in your knowledge before the test so that you can fill them before the real thing.

Hazard Perception Support

Hazard perception is one of the most important parts of your HGV theory test, and it’s the element you’ll be putting into practice most frequently when you’re on the road. Again, one of the things you can do here is make sure you do some practise tests online to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. Above that, you need to learn what the most common mistakes are during the hazard perception portion of the test, and how to avoid making those mistakes yourself.
