Preparing For Your HGV Theory Test

HGV Training Centre

When you’re preparing to upgrade your standard driving license to an HGV one, you will need to take a theory test. Just like your original test, this test is split into 2 parts, multiple choice and hazard perception, but these are aimed at the HGV industry. At The HGV Training Centre, we specialise in providing training, guidance and practice sessions for you to go through to make sure you’re ready. But unlike your practical test, you can prepare for your theory any time, any place. Like right now, by reading this article.

Understand the Process

The best way to combat nerves is to make sure you know what you’re walking in to. That means familiarising yourself with the process. We have a few pointers to help you out:

  • The test is split into 2 sections – multiple choice and hazard perception
  • There are 100 questions in the multiple choice section
  • You need a minimum score of 67 to pass the multiple choice
  • The hazard perception section is made up of 19 videos, with 20 potential hazards in them
  • There are also 100 multiple choice questions in hazard perception, and you need 67 to pass this section too
  • You can split the sections up onto different days if you want, but most people take them in one go

Take A Practice Test

There is nothing truer than the phrase ‘practice makes perfect’, especially when it comes to tests. As early as primary school, students are encouraged to take practice tests to make sure they are prepared for the real thing. And that’s exactly what you should do too. There are plenty of practice tests available online, but we recommend this one, which will take you through a simulation of your real theory test from beginning to end. This might not give you the same questions as you will face on your actual test, but it should give you a good feel for it and get you in the right space to answer questions. It’s also a good way to find out if you have any gaps in your knowledge before the test so that you can fill them before the real thing.

Hazard Perception Support

Hazard perception is one of the most important parts of your HGV theory test, and it’s the element you’ll be putting into practice most frequently when you’re on the road. Again, one of the things you can do here is make sure you do some practise tests online to familiarise yourself with the format of the test. Above that, you need to learn what the most common mistakes are during the hazard perception portion of the test, and how to avoid making those mistakes yourself. We have a whole article dedicated to this here, so we recommend you go ahead and read that as well.

Get Some Support

And finally, if you’re not sure you’re ready, or you have doubts, make sure you ask for help. It doesn’t matter if the person you ask is a friend who’s done it before, the internet or a specialised trainer like us. We will help you understand the process, run through practice quiz’s and teach you anything you need to know in order to pass your theory test the first time around. There is nothing worse than struggling through a theory test, so remember that you don’t have to. There is help out there, you just need to ask.

At The HGV Training Centre, we have experts who are waiting to help you ace your HGV theory test. We will work with you to ensure you have the knowledge, practice and confidence you need to pass the first time, whether you’re an experienced driver or this is your first time. We can provide you with materials and practice tests, as well as one to one advice and training to get you through the process from beginning to end.
