Driver CPC Training - Initial Qualification and Periodic Training

CPC training is now available online as well as at locations across our nationwide network..

Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a legal requirement for most professional HGV drivers. There are two elements: the Initial Qualification for drivers who obtained their HGV licence after September 2009, and the Periodic Training Requirement of 35 hours every five years, which applies to all professional drivers.

Not only does the legislation look after the skills of new drivers, but it also makes sure that more experienced drivers are routinely retrained to keep their skill-set fresh and up to date.

This has a positive impact on road safety and working conditions for drivers, makes Operators more accountable and responsible, and gives a broader and more involved edge to what is already a varied and rewarding career track.

There are different Certificates of Professional Competence (CPC) that you can take. The Initial CPC Qualification is included in your HGV licence training, with Periodic CPC Training required every 5 years after that. This affects anyone driving HGV vehicles for hire and reward (payment).

Drivers CPC Initial Qualification

If you are driving for personal use you will not have to complete the Initial CPC Qualification.

If you passed your car test before Jan 1997 and have ‘Grandfather’ rights for a C1 vehicle, you DON’T need to do this. If you passed your Category C1, C or C+E test before Sept 2009, you DON’T need to do this.

All other professional HGV drivers are required to complete this qualification. Driving professionally without it means you are not legally permitted to do so, which can result in your licence being revoked, fines or even prosecution.

More

Periodic CPC Training

Required every five years after the Initial Qualification. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure this is completed within the required timeframe.

Consists of 35 Hours retraining every 5 years (7 hours per year). If you fail to complete your 35 hours at the end of the 5 year period, your licence will become INVALID until the hours are completed.

Following changes introduced in December 2024, maintaining your qualification now requires you to select one of two paths: National Driver CPC or International Driver CPC. This choice should be determined solely by where you plan to drive, both now and in the future.
