Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose The HGV Driver Training Centre?

The HGV Driver Training Centre has been coordinating HGV training packages since 2012 — that is many years of helping drivers through the process. We manage everything on your behalf, from your medical and theory preparation through to your practical test and job search support. Rated 4.8 on Trustpilot with over 1,200 verified reviews, our track record speaks for itself

How long does it take to learn to drive a HGV?

From initial enquiry to holding your HGV licence typically takes from around 2 to 3 months. This covers your medical, provisional licence application, theory test preparation and booking, practical training and your DVSA practical test.

The practical training itself takes 4 - 6 days for most licence categories. The waiting time between stages — particularly for theory and practical test slots — accounts for most of the overall timeline. HGV Driver Training Centre pre-books key stages wherever possible to keep things moving.

Once you are qualified, our recruitment team supports your job search as part of your package.

How much does HGV training cost?

HGV training costs vary depending on the licence category and your location. HGV Driver Training Centre provides fully managed training packages with no hidden costs. The price you are quoted covers everything included in your package.

For current pricing, call our team free on 0808 168 5255 or use our instant quote tool. We will give you a clear, upfront figure with no surprises.

How much do HGV drivers earn in the UK?

Salaries vary depending on licence category, location, employer and experience. As a general guide:

  • Newly qualified Category C (Class 2) drivers typically start at around £28,000 and £38,000 per year
  • Category C+E (Class 1) drivers typically start between £38,000 and £42,000, with experienced drivers earning £50,000 or more
  • Additional factors such as overnight allowances, performance bonuses and shift patterns can add significantly to take-home pay

HGV driving offers stable, consistent employment with clear progression — particularly for drivers willing to add licence categories over time.

How hard is it to pass the HGV test?

The HGV test requires preparation and focus, but with the right support most candidates pass. The process involves two theory-based assessments (hazard perception and multiple choice) and two practical assessments (the driving test and a vehicle safety demonstration).

HGV Driver Training Centre coordinates your training and test bookings to make sure you are well prepared at every stage. Our Pass Protection add-on covers the cost of one module retake if you’re concerned about passing – speak to our team about it.

Can you go straight to a Class 1 HGV?

Yes. Since a rule change in 2021, you no longer need to hold a Category C licence before beginning C+E training. You can now obtain provisional entitlement for both Cat C and C+E at the same time, meaning you can train for both licences in one combined programme.

Our fast track Cat C and C+E package is the most efficient route from a car licence to a full Class 1 qualification. Call us on 0808 168 5255 to find out more.

Is there a shortage of HGV drivers in the UK?

Yes. The UK logistics sector has faced a sustained shortfall in qualified HGV drivers for several years, driven by an ageing driver workforce, increased demand for freight and distribution, and the lasting impact of Brexit on European driver availability.

This makes it a strong time to enter the profession. Qualified HGV drivers are in consistent demand across sectors including supermarket distribution, construction, and specialist haulage. Call our team on 0808 168 5255 to find out how to get started.
