At the HGV Driver Training Centre, we pride ourselves on our first time pass rates for not only theory but for our training courses. We understand that the testing is government run, and there is no way we can control the theory test, but we can provide you with all of the tools needed to prepare yourself for the tests.
The Theory test is one of the first steps before moving into the practical training. In fact, you cannot sit the practical element of the course until both parts of the theory have been completed. As a company we are make sure all of the correct preparation is made before attempting the theory test. As the last thing we want is for one of our candidates to be retaking multiple tests.
One of the most frequent questions asked is “how do I prepare for the theory’s”. The most important thing is practice, and revising in your own time. We use a superb revision tool which makes the revision process simple and easy to digest.
What the Test Entails
The HGV theory has 2 elements for passing, which both parts can bae sat in one session. In either case, both parts have to be passed within two years in order to remain valid. If you were to fail either you wouldn’t have to retake the one you passed, just the one you failed.
Multiple-Choice – The first part is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions covering all topics from general Highway Code to the basics of commercial driving. To Pass and complete the multiple choice you will need to score 85% or more.
Hazard Perception – the second part contains 19 videos covering 20 developing hazards. You are based on how quickly and accurately you find the hazards. A passing grade is 67%
No matter how much prior experience you have you should not sit this test without sufficient preparation. We encourage our candidates to use the online revision system supplied on by ourselves. It covers all modules with end of module test. When you then have completed all the modules you take the mock tests, just so there are no surprises at the end. We always advise to book theory tests when you are consistently passing 90% + on the mock tests. All practice tests give all candidates the chance to revise all questions as well as complete all hazard perception videos. Learning when to spot the hazards is not the easiest but once you have spent some time revising the videos become very easy to digest and manipulate.
Fortunately, drivers can take as many practice tests as they want. We encourage doing so. We firmly believe that practice makes perfect.
