Is a C1 Licence the Best Start for a Delivery Career?

HGV Training Centre

Having a C1 driving licence entitlement allows you to drive rigid vehicles weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. This means that you can take on a diverse range of delivery driver roles. C1 vehicles are more nimble for local driving and are the choice for many direct-to-customer delivery roles.

Here at HGV Training Centre, we know that career ambitions are totally different from person to person. That’s why we’re the HGV recruitment experts. Here we’ll look at why a delivery career might be right for you, how to go about gaining your C1 licence, and what kind of job roles you can apply for with a C1 licence. We’ll also look at future steps if you want to develop your driving career even further in the future.

Why should I get a C1 licence?

If you’re looking for an engaging and stable career, delivery driving is worth serious consideration. The logistics industry is the backbone of the UK economy, and skilled drivers are always in demand. But where do you start? While you might picture long haul shifts in massive HGVs, the journey for many professional drivers begins with a C1 licence.

A standard car licence (Category B) lets you drive vans up to 3,500kg, but a C1 opens the door to a much wider variety of roles by allowing you to handle rigid vehicles up to 7,500kg. For some people starting out it’s the perfect middle ground: more opportunity than a standard van, but less daunting than an articulated lorry.

Here are a few reasons that the C1 licence is such a popular starting point:

  • More job opportunities: Many companies use 7.5-tonne vehicles for their delivery routes, including supermarket chains, furniture stores, and removals companies. Gaining your C1 licence immediately makes you eligible for these roles, significantly broadening your job prospects.
  • A cost-effective first step: The training and testing process for a C1 licence is typically quicker and less expensive than it is for a full Category C or C+E HGV licence. The vehicles are smaller and easier to manage, making it a more accessible entry into professional driving.
  • Good earning potential: For many local and multi-drop delivery jobs, the pay for C1 drivers is very competitive and often similar to that of drivers with a larger Category C licence. This gives you great value for your initial training investment.

How to get your C1 licence

The process of getting your C1 licence is straightforward when you have the right support. Here at HGV Training Centre, we guide you through every step of the journey, from your first enquiry to landing your first job. We’ve been doing this for years, and our friendly advisors know the process inside out, supporting you with a lot of the admin.

Here’s a breakdown of the steps:

  1. Medical exam: The first thing you need to do is pass a routine medical assessment (form D4) to confirm you’re medically fit to drive a larger vehicle. This can be done with your GP and we can help you arrange it.
  2. Provisional licence application: Once you’ve passed your medical, you’ll apply to the DVLA for your provisional C1 licence using forms D2 and including the medical form D4. Our team will guide you through it to make sure everything is correct.
  3. Theory test: Just like when you learned to drive a car, there are theory tests to pass. You’ll need to complete a multiple-choice assessment, a hazard perception test, and answer questions on case studies (which forms part of the CPC which you need to drive professionally). We provide all the revision materials you’ll need to pass with flying colours.
  4. Practical training and test: You’ll have practical lessons with an expert instructor at one of our 90+ training centres across the UK. Our 4-day courses are designed to build your skills and confidence quickly, preparing you for your practical test (which is another part of the CPC). We even offer a Pass Protection service for extra peace of mind.

What jobs can I do with a C1 licence?

So, what are the typical next steps once you’ve got your C1 licence? You’ll find you’re qualified for a substantial range of active job prospects, many of which offer social  interaction, good pay, and a great deal of independence.

This will give you an idea about the roles you might consider as a C1 driver:

  • Supermarket home delivery: Driving for major retailers like Tesco or Ocado, you’ll be the friendly face bringing groceries directly to customers’ homes. This role combines driving skill with customer service and often comes with a stable, predictable schedule.
  • Multi-drop courier services: Working for companies like DPD, you’ll handle multiple deliveries within a set local route. You’ll get to know your area like the back of your hand, and it’s a physically active role that keeps you on your toes.
  • Furniture and large goods delivery: Think of all those sofas, beds, and washing machines that need delivering. Many of these are transported in 7.5-tonne lorries, making this a common role for C1 drivers.
  • Removals work: As part of a removals team, you’ll be responsible for driving the vehicle that transports people’s entire lives from one home to another. The day is full of excitement and probably a fair amount of stress, so it’s an active job where no two days are the same.

A C1 licence is the first step you need to take on these roles and embarking on an engaging career path where you’re out and about rather than stuck behind a desk.

What’s next? Your driving career path

Gaining your C1 licence is a fantastic achievement, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the story. Many drivers use it as a stepping stone to bigger vehicles and different types of work. After gaining some experience in a 7.5-tonne vehicle, you might decide you want to progress further with an additional licence qualification:

  • Category C (Class 2): This licence allows you to drive rigid vehicles over 7,500kg, like large commercial delivery trucks used for regional distribution.
  • Category C+E (Class 1): The top HGV licence, this lets you drive articulated lorries. This opens up long-haul and international driving roles.

The experience you gain as a C1 delivery driver provides a solid foundation, making the transition to larger vehicles smoother, if that’s what interests you. Or you may find that C1 vehicle driving is ideal for your lifestyle. Both are valid options.
