If you’re looking to move your career, becoming a HGV driver is a great option. Not only is it an incredibly rewarding career option, but with the continuing shortage of HGV drivers (and the increased demand placed on them by Covid-19) you are unlikely to ever find a more safe and secure job. But to start with, you’ll need your HGV license, and that means signing up to a HGV training school. But if you’ve never done this kind of training before, how do you know what to look for, and what to ask, when choosing the right HGV training school for you?
Before you sign up with any driving school, the most important thing is to do your research. There are hundreds, if not thousands of HGV driver training schools out there, and each one will have their own USP. Some specialise in offering certain types of license, some will train you up and send you on your way, and others will help you find your first job as a HGV driver. Taking some time to find out what’s available in your local area means you can find the best option for you, and not end up wasting your money on something that isn’t the right fit.
Speaking of which…
Understanding what kind of license you need means you will be able to choose the right school. Take a look at what training courses each of your prospective HGV schools offer. Are you looking for a driver training school that offers theory tests, coach and minibus training and car trailer training, as well as the HGV licenses? If you’re looking for work in the field of driving that isn’t limited to just lorries, then you might want to broaden out your qualifications with different types of licenses. This will make you more attractive to prospective employers, so it’s worth considering when choosing the license, and the school.
Unfortunately, one thing you will always have to bear in mind is the cost. HGV qualifications are often pricey, so you will need to be prepared to pay a substantial amount for training. But when you calculate the potential earnings you can gain from a job in the haulage industry when you’re done, you can work out which courses will be more affordable. The price of your training will vary depending on location and what license you’re trying to gain, so make sure you compare prices and find the best deal for you.
Of course, finding the right training isn’t much help unless there is availability for training that fits into your schedule. For example, if you’re working a job currently but want to earn your HGV license as a way to move on to a new career, then you may not be able to take lessons during the day. So you would need to find a driver school that could offer flexible training slots at any stage of the day. For example, could you have your lessons earlier in the morning, or only on weekends? Find a HGV driver training school that fits into your schedule, and it will be much easier to achieve your goals.
