It's a significant career move, and the sooner you're qualified, the sooner you're earning. So let's cut straight to it: what does the fastest possible route to qualification actually look like? - [Is it worth doing the international CPC?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/is-it-worth-doing-the-international-cpc/): The periodic CPC qualification for professional HGV drivers in the UK is now split into National and International CPC. Both require 35 hours of learning over each 5 year period, but under the National CPC there are now shorter, more flexible course options available. If there is any chance that you will need, or want, to work as a professional HGV driver within the EU, you should make sure that your periodic CPC fulfils International requirements.  - [Initial and periodic driver CPC: What do you need and when?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/initial-and-periodic-driver-cpc-what-do-you-need-and-when/): The initial driver CPC qualification is made up of modules 2 (Case Studies) and 4 (Practical) of the HGV driving tests. It’s something we’ve seen before, and it’s going to take some joined up thinking by government and industry to successfully navigate. We’re talking about a skilled HGV driver shortage. We saw it during the pandemic, when government initiatives had to be called on to help. This time, there’s more warning. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) report from the start of 2025 took demographic stats from across the industry and has identified an imbalance in age ranges for HGV drivers, predicting that as a generation of drivers nears retirement age, we’ll need around 40,000 new skilled drivers per year over the next 5 years to keep supply chains running smoothly.  - [Does the driver CPC put young people off HGV training?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/does-the-driver-cpc-put-young-people-off-hgv-training/): The UK’s haulage industry is facing a crisis. One day you’re a hero, delivering essential supplies during a pandemic. The next, you’re unfairly criticised for your driving practices and use of the road. There are many misconceptions about HGV drivers, but the one indisputable fact is that they’re essential to the UK economy. Without them, society would grind to a halt. Indeed, the staggering shortage of 100,000 HGV drivers that the nation is seeing today is partly down to these misconceptions. Misinformation about working practices, salary and driver hours, as well as a perception that the job is somehow easy and for the low skilled, deters many from pursuing what is in fact an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career path. - [HGV driver crisis – why supermarket shelves could be empty this summer](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/summer-food-shortages-looming-unless-hgv-driver-shortfall-addressed/): An acute shortage of lorry drivers in the UK is having a significant impact on the nation’s food supply chain. Because the brake speed for HGVs is slower than a standard car, HGV drivers need to be more aware of developing hazards on the road, and how to react to them in plenty of time. That’s why there is a hazard perception test included in the HGV training programme – to brush up on those skills and make sure you’re ready to hit the road. - [Is There Still a Demand for HGV Drivers in 2021?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/is-there-still-a-demand-for-hgv-drivers-in-2021/): When it comes to choosing a career, there are probably a few things you’ll think about. The kind of job it is, whether you have the skills needed, and how suited it is to your lifestyle. But one of the big considerations is often how essential the role is – and therefore how secure your job would be. Maybe not in the company at the time, but within the industry. Considering how easy it would be to get a job in your preferred industry is one of the big things for every job seeker, so today we wanted to talk about HGV driving, and whether there is still a demand for HGV drivers in 2021. (Hint: the answer is yes, there definitely is!) - [HGV Driver Hours – A Beginners Guide](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/hgv-driver-hours-a-beginners-guide/): Did you know that HGV drivers can't just drive for as long as they want? It might sound efficient, but driving for 9 hours at a time wouldn't be the best experience for the driver! Instead, they take regular breaks so that they can relax, recharge, and hit the road again fresh and alert. But if you haven't been driving for long, you might not know when you should take breaks, and how long they should be to make sure you're on top form. Luckily, there are regulations that will help you understand what your breaks should look like! So today, we’re going to talk about what they are, and how they might affect your working patterns. - [What Does The Driver Training Medical Exam Cover?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/what-does-the-driver-training-medical-exam-cover/): When you’re going through your driver training to become a HGV driver, you probably feel like there are a lot of different hoops you have to jump through. And to be honest, you would be right. That’s because HGV drivers have a lot of responsibility, not only to get their cargo to its destination safely and on time, but to ensure their driving doesn’t harm any other road users, or cause any kind of issues. Arguably, the biggest hurdle for aspiring HGV drivers looking to get or renew their license is the medical exam. But the DVLA requires all HGV drivers to be reasonably fit and healthy in order to legally operate any commercial vehicle on the roads. But if you’ve never gone through it before you might be a bit nervous, and wondering what it actually involves, and what you have to do to be medically signed off. Well, let us enlighten you! - [Keeping Yourself Safe On The Road](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/keeping-yourself-safe-on-the-road/): When it comes to being a HGV driver, it can seem like there is a lot to remember. But the good thing is, once you’ve learnt it, it all becomes second nature very quickly. But one of the areas that takes a little bit more work is safety. Not of the HGV, or even the theory around safe driving. We’re talking about driver safety when you’re out on the road for long hours, and especially overnight. Because unfortunately, lorries are tempting targets for thieves and gangs, who know that they are full of valuable items. And if you find yourself having to stop in undesirable places overnight, it pays to know how to protect yourself. So, here’s a few tips from our trainers to help keep you safe on long journeys. - [What’s it Like to be a HGV Driver?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/whats-it-like-to-be-a-hgv-driver/): One of the biggest questions we get asked by aspiring HGV drivers is ‘what’s it really like?’ And we can’t blame them for asking. Most of them are completely new to the industry, and unlike office jobs, where it’s relatively easy to guess what the day to day job will be like, driving a HGV can seem like a completely alien world. So before you jump in, you probably want to get a better idea of what your life will be like on the job, what your average day looks like, and how it feels to be an HGV driver. That’s what we’re here to help you out with today. - [The History of HGVs](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/the-history-of-hgvs/): If you’ve been with us a while, you know that we firmly believe that HGVs are critical to keeping our country running. As the recent issues with Brexit have shown, we rely on HGVs to move goods around the country and in and out, and without them, life would be very different. But how did we get to this point? What did we do before the HGV, and how did it evolve to be such an important part of our economy? Today, we present – a history of HGVs. - [The New Look for Haulage](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/the-new-look-for-haulage/): Well, here we are. After years of discussion, debate and negotiation, the UK has now officially left the EU. Now, instead of speculating about what Brexit might do to various industries, we are now starting to see the real impact. Of course it’s still early days, but in some industries the changes have already started to become very clear. For the haulage industry, it’s a little difficult to see, since the current Covid-19 travel restrictions are muddying the waters a little bit. But even with all of that, there are some negatives to Brexit which are already starting to show, especially around the borders. And with trade starting to return to normal levels, the true impact of Brexit is starting to hit home. - [How Important is Driver Mental Health](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/how-important-is-driver-mental-health/): We’ve talked a lot about how essential HGV drivers are. The pandemic has highlighted this better than we ever could – after all without logistics companies and HGV drivers many more businesses would have collapsed during these difficult times. But that’s an awful lot of pressure for HGV drivers to face, and on top of that, drivers face their own unique mental health struggles. So if you’re running a logistics firm, you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to support your drivers and keep their physical and mental health in tip-top shape. - [HGV Training Jargon Buster](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/hgv-training-jargon-buster/): When it comes to learning to drive an HGV, you would think the whole process is fairly straightforward. Like any industry, the HGV world is full of acronyms, or specialist phrases, and as a driver you will be expected to learn them all. We understand just how daunting this task is, so today we’re going to help you hit the ground running with a jargon-busting blog, covering some of the more common jargon you’re likely to hear. - [Is HGV Driving a Good Career for an Introvert?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/is-hgv-driving-a-good-career-for-an-introvert/): When it comes to the kind of person who should drive a HGV, we generally say there are no limits. In previous years, flexibility wasn’t necessarily something you looked for – but now it’s almost essential. When your work day is done, you go home, relax, have dinner and go to bed, ready to do it all again tomorrow. - [Can I Drive an LGV in the UK on a Work Visa?](https://www.hgvtrainingcentre.co.uk/can-i-drive-an-lgv-in-the-uk-on-a-work-visa/): Driving an LGV is one of those jobs that many people don’t think twice about, but in reality is vital for our country.
